WhatsApp is reported to be testing new notification channels for its Android app running on Android 8.0 Oreo devices. The Notification Channels feature was introduced in Android 8.0 Oreo that lets you customise the notifications even if they belong to the same app. You can choose how different notifications look, sound, vibrate, or don’t on your device. WhatsApp seems to have rolled out this feature for its Android app, which is said to be version 2.18.18 beta, however, the feature may have been released in the previous versions.

As per a report by AndroidPolice, the WhatsApp v2.18.18 for beta brings the notifications channels on Android Oreo-running phones. WhatsApp comes with 10 notification channels – group notifications, message notifications, chat history, backup, critical app alerts, failure notifications, media playback, Uncategorized, other notifications, sending media, and silent notifications. Each of the notification channels has its own settings that can be customised separately wherein letting you prioritize some notifications over the others.

Besides, the report further says that if you want to change a particular notification via the notification channels settings but cannot figure out where it is located, there is a way to do that as well. When you get the notification that you want to turn off, just tap and hold it. You’ll get to know the notification channel type there with an option to disable it. However, if you want to change the priority of the notification, tap on All Categories, and you’ll see the notification channels settings page where you can set the priority. This can also become handy in cases when you are chatting via WhatsApp Web and its notification keeps floating in the notification panel of your phone.

As we said, this update is available in the beta version of the app for Android Oreo devices, so if you have neither of them on your smartphone, you cannot find the new settings. However, if you have an Android Oreo-running smartphone and want to become a beta tester for WhatsApp, just go to the Google Play store, followed by WhatsApp page. Then, scroll down to find the ‘Become a beta tester’ option, sign up for it and in a few minutes, you’ll see an update for WhatsApp under the beta release. Go ahead and install the WhatsApp version 2.18.18 beta to start using the notification channels.
